Commercial architecture design is the process of creating and administering the new construction or renovation of commercial spaces. Commercial design addresses the choices of building materials, the general layout, flooring, ceilings, structural, mechanical, plumbing and electrical systems. Commercial architects must coordinate communications with other construction professionals, owners, and contractors.

Commercial architecture begins by working with clients and developing a scheme. The first step of the process is to field verify the existing setting. Essentially, this step has to do with taking measurements at the site to determine existing conditions and dimensions.

With current knowledge of conditions, it is possible to start planning the new layouts of the space. At the same time, ideas about ceiling and lighting options will begin to emerge, as well as ideas about how to best arrange the interior space to meet the required needs. Each phase of design must be approved by the client to arrive at the final design.

The plans and specifications must be approved by the City. Throughout the project, the architect will remain in constant communication with everyone involved in the project, making sure progress is consistent with the approved plans.
